The spectral measure of certain elements of the complex group ring of a wreath product

چکیده
We use elementary methods to compute the L-dimension of the eigenspaces of the Markov operator on the lamplighter group and of generalizations of this operator on other groups. In particular, we give a transparent explanation of the spectral measure of the Markov operator on the lamplighter group found by Grigorchuk-Zuk [4]. The latter result was used by Grigorchuk-Linnell-Schick-Zuk [3] to produce a counterexample to a strong version of the Atiyah conjecture about the range of L-Betti numbers. We use our results to construct manifolds with certain L-Betti numbers (given as convergent infinite sums of rational numbers) which are not obviously rational, but we have been unable to determine whether any of them are irrational. 1 Notation and statement of main result In this section we introduce notation that will be fixed throughout and will be used in the statement of the main result. Let U denote a discrete group with torsion. Let e be a nontrivial projection (so e = e = e, e 6= 0, 1) in C[U ]. For example, U could be finite and nontrivial, and e could be the ‘average’ of the elements of U , avg(U) := 1 |U | ∑ u∈U u. e-mail: [email protected] www: http://mat.uab.es/dicks/ Fax: ++34 -93/581 2790 Research funded by the DGI (Spain) through Grant BFM2000-0354. e-mail: [email protected] www: http://wwwmath.uni-muenster.de/u/lueck/ Fax: ++49 -251/83 38370

Restricted cascade and wreath products of fuzzy finite switchboard state machines
A finite switchboard state machine is a specialized finite state machine. It is built by binding the concepts of switching state machines and commutative state machines. The main purpose of this paper is to give a specific algorithm for fuzzy finite switchboard state machine and also, investigates the concepts of switching relation, covering, restricted cascade products and wreath products of f...
متن کاملThe Uniqueness of a Certain Type of Subdirect Product
We introduce the "$type{lffs}$ subdirect product" and show that every ring is uniquely a $type{lffs}$ subdirect product of a family of $simple{basicls}$ rings. Also we show some applications.
متن کاملA note on the socle of certain types of f-rings
For any reduced commutative $f$-ring with identity and bounded inversion, we show that a condition which is obviously necessary for the socle of the ring to coincide with the socle of its bounded part, is actually also sufficient. The condition is that every minimal ideal of the ring consist entirely of bounded elements. It is not too stringent, and is satisfied, for instance, by rings of ...
متن کاملA wreath product group approach to signal and image processing .I. Multiresolution analysis
This paper continues the investigation in digital signal processing of spectral analysis on certain non-commutative nite groups|wreath product groups. We describe here the generalization of discrete cyclic convolution to convolution over these groups and show how it reduces to multiplication in the spectral domain. Finite group based convolution is deened in both the spatial and spectral domain...
متن کاملSpectral Computations on Lamplighter Groups and Diestel-leader Graphs
The Diestel-Leader graph DL(q, r) is the horocyclic product of the homogeneous trees with respective degrees q+1 and r+1. When q = r, it is the Cayley graph of the lamplighter group (wreath product) Zq≀Z with respect to a natural generating set. For the “Simple random walk” (SRW) operator on the latter group, Grigorchuk and Żuk and Dicks and Schick have determined the spectrum and the (on-diago...
